The centre of Medieval St Albans was the Clock Tower built around 1403-12. Near the Clock Tower stood the Eleanor Cross, pulled down and replaced with a Market House. This in turn was replaced by a water fountain in 1894, this too has now gone! The Clock tower medieval bells were rung at 4am to summon apprentices to work, and again at 8pm to close the market and shops.
